According to a media report, there was a hacker attack on the website of the German federal election commissioner at the end of August, reported dpa.

According to the report, the website bundeswahlleiter.de, where official election results are published, was bombarded with an extremely high number of requests from the internet, Business Insider reported on Wednesday.

The servers collapsed under the data load and the website was temporarily unavailable.

In response to an enquiry from dpa, a spokesperson merely stated that the website of the federal election commissioner was accessible to a limited extent for a few minutes at the end of August due to the disruption.

The problem had been analysed and the technical concepts had been further developed accordingly, he said.

"The information for the public through the website of the federal election commissioner was and is guaranteed," the spokesperson said. The reasons for the disruption were not given.

Business Insider, citing government circles, reported that IT systems necessary for the election itself had not been affected. A deep protection system had been set up around the corresponding servers.
