Russia's COVID-19 cases top 5.9m

Russia registered 25,704 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours as the Delta variant continues to spread, taking the nationwide tally to 5,907,999, the official monitoring and response center said Friday, reported Xinhua.

The center reported a record number of 799 coronavirus-related fatalities in the past day, raising the national death toll to 146,868, while the number of recoveries grew by 21,932 to 5,300,908.

Moscow, Russia's worst-hit region, added 5,382 new cases, taking the city's total to 1,454,217.

Nearly 158 million COVID-19 tests have been conducted across the country.
