Number of bankruptcies rises in Finland in Aug

A total of 296 bankruptcy proceedings were instigated in August in Finland, which is 22 bankruptcies more than in the corresponding period one year before, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of staff-years in enterprises that filed for bankruptcy totalled 1,458, which is 512 staff-years more than in August 2025.

The 12-month moving annual change in instigated bankruptcy proceedings was 7 per cent in August 2026.

A total of 25 enterprises in manufacturing, 58 in trade and 40 in construction filed for bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, there were 10,781 enterprise openings in April to June 2026. At the same time, enterprise closures numbered 12,013. Compared to the corresponding period of the year before, the number of enterprise openings decreased by 1,600 and the number of enterprise closures increased by 1,200.

In April to June 2026, there were 1,200 more enterprise closures than openings.

The number of enterprise closures in trade and manufacturing was twice as high as the number of enterprise openings.

The number of enterprise openings decreased in all industries except for information and communication and real estate activities compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The number of enterprise openings decreased most in Pirkanmaa and the number of enterprise closures grew relatively most in North Savo in April to June 2026 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

The number of enterprise openings exceeded the number of enterprise closures only in South Karelia and Åland.
