Number of unsold new vehicles rises in 2016

The number of unused vehicles increased in the country in last year as higher number of new vehicles were registered but lower number were used.

According to the Statistics Finland, at the end of 2016, the Finnish vehicle register contained 6,316,531 vehicles, of which 4,996,194 were in traffic use.

The total number of registered vehicles grew by 2.7 percent and the number of vehicles in traffic use went down by 1.4 percent compared with the situation at the end of 2015.

At the end of 2016, the vehicle register of the Åland Islands contained 46,281 vehicles. These data, compiled by Statistics Finland, are based on the vehicle traffic register of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi) and the vehicle register of Ålands Motorfordonsbyrå.

At the end of 2016, there were 3,346,005 passenger cars in the register, of which 2,652,765 were in traffic use. The number of registered passenger cars went up by 2.7 per cent and the number of passenger cars in traffic by 0.6 per cent. The number of registered passenger cars was growing most in North Ostrobothnia and least in South Karelia.

The average age of registered passenger cars in Mainland Finland was 14,3 years and that of cars in traffic use was 11.8 years.

The average age of passenger cars was lowest in the region of Uusimaa 11.9 years and highest in the regions of North Karelia and Kainuu 16.3 years.

The most common models of passenger cars in the register of Mainland Finland were Toyota Corolla (around 150,000), Volkswagen Golf (about 126,000) and Toyota Avensis (approx. 87,000), said the Statistics Finland.
