Finland has decided that the Finnish Defence Forces will contribute to safeguarding Denmark's airspace during the European Council on Wednesday and the European Political Community (EPC) meeting on Thursday in Copenhagen, said an official press release on Tuesday.

The President approved the government proposal in this regard following a request for assistance made by the Danish government.

As per the decision, Finland will deploy to Denmark a detachment capable of identifying and countering drones during the international meetings.

“Finland stands fully behind Denmark in its efforts to secure the airspace and countering hybrid activities of the kind we have seen in the last days and weeks,” President Alexander Stubb wrote in a post on his social media platform X.

“I see this as an excellent example of the type of concrete Nordic cooperation we need,” he added.

The Finnish detachment will be placed under the command and control of Denmark, and the Danish authorities will assume the overall command of the operation.

"By joining the operation we send a concrete message of support to another Nordic country and NATO Ally. Drones are a topical threat, and Finland has strong capability in countering them," said Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen in the press release.
