Migri to cut 100 jobs at year end

The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) will cut about 100 employees by the end of this year, reported a Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

The Director General of the Finnish Immigration Service, Jaana Vuorio told the newspaper that the number of employees will be reduced to 900 from the existing number of about 1,000, reported National broadcaster Yle quoting the newspaper.

The authority will emphasize to not renewing fixed-term agreements with the employees. There are about 300 temporary employees at Migri now and the number will be reduced to 200 next year.

Terming the cut of large scale workers as unprecedented, Vuorio told the government budget mainly bear the expenses of Migri as the fees paid by the applicants to the immigration unit is not enough to run its activities.

According to Migri, the residence permit processing times have increased significantly. The average waiting time for handling a first-time residence permit this year is 52 days, which is more than double compared to the average processing of last year. The average processing time was 25 days last year.

The average processing time of renewal of residence permit application was longer, which is on an average 67 days.
