The University of Helsinki has been named the world’s 96th best university, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The ranking has seen the university rise three places from last year when it was placed 99th, said a press release issued by the University of Helsinki.

The University of Helsinki remains the only Finnish university in the top 100. Among Nordic universities it places 2nd together with Lund University, and among European universities 34th, climbing two places in both categories.

The UK and USA stand as the most heavily represented countries in the top 10. The University of Oxford once again tops the global ranking, California Institute of Technology placing 2nd. The first Nordic university listed is Karolinska Institute, ranking 41st.

In the rankings, the performance indicators are grouped into five areas: reaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. The University of Helsinki improved in citations.

“We are pleased that the university strengthened its position among the top hundred universities in the world. Significantly, the ranking saw rise in citations, an indicator for research influence,” said Rector of Helsinki University Jari Niemelä.

There are between 18,000 and 23,000 universities in the world. The University of Helsinki places on average among the top 100 – or top 0.5 % – universities in the world.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is among the most recognized international rankings.
