Landslides kill 10 in Nepal, 8 in India

A landslide triggered by incessant rainfall in Nepal's western Rolpa district has killed 10 people and left two others missing, police said on Thursday, reported Xinhua.

The landslide occurred on Wednesday night in a remote hilly area, sweeping away nine houses, two cowsheds, a shop and a church. The entire small settlement was washed away by the disaster.

"Five bodies have been recovered from the landslide site," Krishna Shrestha, spokesperson for the district police, told Xinhua. The other five bodies were recovered several kilometers away in neighbouring Pyuthan district after they were swept downstream.

Two survivors are receiving treatment while a search operation is underway for the remaining two missing people.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the difficult terrain and remote location of the affected area.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the landslide in India's Mumbai has risen to eight, officials said Thursday.

The landslide took place early Wednesday amid heavy rains and hit a row of shanties in Ashok Nagar in Sakinaka area of the city, trapping the residents.

"Seven people injured in the landslide were taken to civic-run hospitals and are undergoing treatment there," said a local police officer.

Reports said the rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force had a tough time clearing the debris and pulling out bodies and the injured. The personnel used machines to cut through the boulders and the debris.

Meanwhile, the rescuers have called off the search and rescue operation. However, the fire brigade and civic body teams are at the spot clearing the debris.
