8 dead in landslides, 5 of family killed as house collapses in India

At least eight persons, including children and women, died and over 15 were injured when multiple landslides occurred amid heavy rains in the Mon district of India's north-eastern state of Nagaland on Sunday, a senior district official confirmed, reported Xinhua.

While four dead bodies had been recovered, efforts were being made to find the other four. Those injured were admitted to a local hospital.

"Heavy rains caused the landslides. It is after many years that this area of Nagaland received so much rains. More than 40 houses have been washed away. We are still assessing the extent of damages caused," said Mon district's Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak.

According to him, the landslides started occurring at around 6 a.m., and continued through the day.

Meanwhile, five members of a family were killed after a wall of a house collapsed on them in Uttar Pradesh's Habipur village, reported ANI, quoting Minister Kapil Dev Agarwal late Sunday.

Following the incident, Uttar Pradesh Minister Kapil Dev Agarwal visited the hospital to meet the injured.

Minister Agarwal said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognisance of the incident.

"A very tragic accident has occurred in Muzaffarnagar where five people from the same family died due to the collapse of the roof of a house located in Habipur village... I have reached the hospital where two girls are in an injured condition. Instructions have been given to the doctors to provide complete arrangements for them... This is undoubtedly a tragic incident for us. The Chief Minister himself has taken cognisance of it...", he told ANI.
