Russia has requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council Saturday to discuss the situation after the airstrike in Syria by the United States, France and Britain, diplomats said.

The Security Council will meet at 11:00 a.m. EST (1500 GMT). The UN Secretariat has been asked to brief the council.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday praised the airstrike.

"A perfectly executed strike last night. Thank you to France and the United Kingdom for their wisdom and the power of their fine Military. Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!" he tweeted.

The trilateral operation, which came without any UN authorization or verifiable proof that the Syrian government had led a chemical weapon attack on a rebel-held suburb near Damascus on April 7, has been condemned by Syria, Russia and Iran.
