U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to impose 10 percent tariffs on imported goods from all countries, according to one of his posts on social media on Friday, reported Xinhua.
The measure will be effective almost immediately, according to Trump.
Trump says he will sign order imposing 10% global tariff
Earlier on the day, Trump said he will sign an order imposing a 10 percent global tariff to replace some of the emergency duties the U.S. Supreme Court ruled illegal.
"Today I will sign an Order to impose a 10% GLOBAL TARIFF, under Section 122 (of the 1974 Trade Act), over and above our normal TARIFFS already being charged, and we are also initiating several Section 301 and other Investigations to protect our Country from unfair Trading practices," Trump said on Truth Social.
Speaking at a news briefing, Trump harshly attacked the justices who ruled against the tariffs, saying that the court has been "swayed by foreign interests."
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that the Trump administration's sweeping tariffs under a law meant for use in national emergencies are illegal.
The justices ruled that the U.S. president did not have the authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose import tariffs on goods from nearly all U.S. trading partners and it is the right of Congress to impose taxes, not the president.
"The Supreme Court's Ruling on TARIFFS is deeply disappointing!" Trump said.
Meanwhile, Trump condemned the Supreme Court for not addressing the issue of potential refunds for importers that have paid tariffs and said he believes the matter will be litigated for years.
Asked about the status of trade deals that were negotiated and set rates for tariffs under IEEPA, Trump said some of them will continue but others will be replaced.
