Dozens of Muslim worshippers were killed on Sunday in an attack on a mosque in eastern Burkina Faso, announced the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina, giving a provisional toll in a statement issued on Monday, reported Xinhua.

At least 14 Muslim worshippers, two of whom died in hospital, were killed on Sunday in an attack on a mosque in Natiaboani, in Burkina Faso's Est region, it said.

Armed individuals attacked a mosque in Natiaboani around 5 a.m. Sunday, killing several dozens of people, a security source said on Monday.

Soldiers and members of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland, auxiliaries to the Burkina Faso army, were also targeted "by these hordes who came in large numbers," according to another local source.

On the same day, at least 15 people were killed in an attack on a Catholic church in the village of Essakane in the Sahel region of northern Burkina Faso, a church official said in a statement.
