Incessant rains trigger floods in northeast India

Nearly 29,000 people have been hit by floods in India's northeastern state of Assam over the past few days due to incessant rains, according to a daily flood report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, reported Xinhua.

The people are hit majorly in the districts of Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji. "Lakhimpur is the worst hit with over 23,500 people affected, followed by Dibrugarh with more than 3,800 people and Dhemaji with almost 1,500 persons," the report said.

Local media reported that embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in Lakhimpur, Goalpara, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Baksa, Dima Hasao and Karimganj districts.

The local meteorological department said in a forecast that incessant rains will continue till June 19.

None of the rivers in the flood-affected areas is flowing above the danger mark so far.
