Police are still searching for two people after six bodies have been recovered from the St. Lawrence River in Canada, reported Xinhua on Friday, quoting local media.

The six people whose bodies were found and recovered in Akwesasne from the St. Lawrence River on Thursday consisted of two families of Romanian and Indian origins who were likely trying to enter the United States, police updated on Friday.

Akwesasne is a Mohawk community about 120 kilometres west of Montreal that straddles the Canada-U.S. border and occupies territory in Ontario, Quebec and New York state.

One of them was a young child, who was found with a Canadian passport, police told CTV News on Thursday. The child was a member of the Romanian family. Police believe a second child from the same Romanian family, an infant, is still missing, CTV News reported.

Another missing person is Casey Oakes, 30, an Akwesasne resident. Oakes was last seen Wednesday boarding a small, light blue vessel which was later found near the bodies of the six deceased. Akwesasne police could not confirm whether Oakes has any connection to the victims, according to the report.

Akwesasne authorities are continuing their search for additional victims with the assistance of provincial police, who are offering a helicopter, special investigators and divers at the site, CTV News reported.
