Season lowest -42.8 °C temperature recorded in Lapland

The severe cold wave continued across Finland and the temperature fell further on Friday, said Finnish weather forecasting company Foreca.
The Met Office recorded the lowest temperature of this winter minus 42.8 degrees Celsius at Savukoski, a municipality in Lapland on Friday morning and temperatures at five observation centres in Lapland dropped to bellow minus 40 degrees Celsius by 3:00 p.m.
The weather, however, will start to be warmer from next week after the clear sky will turn into cloudy from Sunday.
Meanwhile, most of the parts of the country will experience severe cold on late Friday and early Saturday nights.
The average temperature in the Southern and Eastern parts will be minus 15 degrees Celsius while the mercury will drop to 20–30 degrees Celsius in the central part and 25–40 degrees Celsius in the Northern Finland.
Earlier on January 5, the Met Office recorded the lowest temperature of this winter minus 39.9 degrees Celsius at Savukoski.
Last year, the lowest temperature in the country was minus 39.6 degrees Celsius at Savukoski on February 4, 2025.
The temperature dropped to minus 44.3 degrees Celsius at Enontekiö Airport on January 5, 2024.
The record lowest temperature in Finland minus 51.5 degrees Celsius was measured in Kittilä, on January 28, 1999.
