Mercury drops to -39.9°C at Savukoski as cold wave continues

The severe cold wave and snow fall, which started on new year eve continued across Finland and the temperature fell further on Monday, said Finnish weather forecasting company Foreca.

The Met Office recorded the lowest temperature of this winter minus 39.9 degrees Celsius at Savukoski, a municipality in Lapland on Monday morning.

Earlier on January 2, Foreca also recorded the minus 39.9 degrees Celsius temperature at Kilpisjärvi and Enontekiö areas in Lapland.

According to the weather forecast, the cold wave will continue for the next two weeks and the temperatures is likely to drop further to minus 40 degrees Celsius in different parts of northern Finland.

Last year, the lowest temperature in the country was minus 39.6 degrees Celsius at Savukoski on February 4, 2025.

The temperature dropped to minus 44.3 degrees Celsius at Enontekiö Airport on January 5, 2024.

The record lowest temperature in Finland minus 51.5 degrees Celsius was measured in Kittilä, on January 28, 1999.

Meanwhile, flights and rail services are being delayed due to the cold weather.
