Polar night begins in Northern Finland

The polar night ((endless night) has begun at Nuorgam, the northernmost village in Utsjoki in Finland on Tuesday afternoon.

The sun set at 12:28pm in Utsjoki and little bit earlier at Nuorgam.

According to Finnish weather forecasting company Foreca, it will not rise at Nuorgam for about seven weeks. The sun will rise again after mid-January.

The polar night, well-known as kaamos in Finnish, is the period around the winter equinox when the sun does not rise during the daytime above the horizon at any point.
