Over 11,000 homes in eastern Finland were still without power at 6.00 pm on Thursday evening, reported the local media.

Most of the power cuts were in the area where electricity is supplied by the power company Pohjois-KarjalanSähkö.

Pohjois-KarjalanSähkö said increased snow weight piling on tree branches and trunks had bent power lines.

The repair work during the day involved 170 men and was expected to continue throughout the night.

Helicopters were, however, not dispatched to the sky to aid the repair work on Thursday due to a heavy fog.
