On Wednesday, 13 July 2022, cyanobacterial rafts were observed in satellite images in the Gulf of Finland, south of the Porvoo-Loviisa area. Photo: SYKE.

The cyanobacterial situation has deteriorated considerably in sea areas but remained stable in lakes, said the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) in a press release on Thursday.

There has been a sharp increase in cyanobacterial observations both on the coast and in the open sea.

Observations have increased in both the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

The cyanobacterial situation in lakes has remained above average levels, although observations have increased slightly due to the warmer weather.

The national cyanobacterial monitoring is carried out as part of the monitoring of the state of the environment in cooperation with the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres), municipal environmental and health authorities and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).
