Former Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal has joined Getafe on a free transfer, the La Liga club announced Tuesday.

The 34-year-old right back, who ended a 13-year spell at Real Madrid in June after making 451 appearances for the club, has signed a contract with Getafe until the end of the season.

"The right back begins a new chapter with the Blues, bringing leadership and experience," Getafe said in a statement on its website.

Carvajal was eligible to join Getafe outside the transfer window because he was a free agent, although the club still had to comply with La Liga's financial regulations.

Getafe president Angel Torres said the signing had been straightforward and confirmed that Carvajal would be officially presented Friday.

"Carvajal's signing hasn't been complicated. We have done it and we will present him on Friday," Torres said, adding that the defender had passed his medical examination several days earlier.

However, Carvajal is not expected to make his debut immediately as he works toward regaining match fitness.

"He says he is in good shape, but he will have to speak to coach Jose Bordalas and respect the time frame," Torres said.
