Olympic champion Cameron McEvoy broke the men's 50 meters freestyle world record at the China Open swimming championships here on Friday.

The 31-year-old clocked 20.88 seconds to secure the gold medal, trimming 0.03 seconds off the 16-year-old previous mark of 20.91 set by Brazil's Cesar Cielo in December 2009.

McEvoy won the 50m gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics in a time of 21.25 seconds and went on to claim the world title in this event at last year's Singapore World Championships in 21.14.
