Bayern Munich calmly reached the Champions League quarter-finals for a fourth straight season on Wednesday after another of Paris Saint-Germain's former players scored against them to leave their European dream as distant as ever.

AC Milan drew 0-0 at Tottenham Hotspur in the other last-16 second leg to go through 1-0 on aggregate. The seven-times winners had the better chances and deserved to progress, being helped by Spurs defender Cristian Romero receiving a second booking on 77 minutes.

Ex-PSG forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting struck on the hour for Bayern after a mistake by Marco Verratti and Serge Gnabry netted late on to give the hosts a 2-0 win and 3-0 success over the two legs.

Kingsley Coman, also previously a PSG player, had scored the winner in the first leg in Paris as well as in the 2020 final. Despite the billions put into the club by Qatari owners since 2011, the French champions failed again to come close to a prize they have never won.

Whether the limp exit plays a role in Lionel Messi's decision to leave or stay remains to be seen, but for now Bayern march on in the Champions League in pursuit of a seventh triumph.

Captain Thomas Müller told DAZN: "We had that bit of luck when Matthijs cleared off the line. But in the second half...we were much clearer in our thinking.

"We had the better of it and deserved to win. With the way we tackled, we had the right mentality tonight."

Bayern went with the same side that won 2-1 at VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga at the weekend, meaning Josip Stanisic kept his place.

Kylian Mbappe, only a substitute in the first leg because of injury, started in the pouring Munich rain and had an early shot saved.

Bayern also began brightly but it was PSG's Messi who was superbly denied by Alphonso Davies midway through the first half after Nuno Mendes was given too much room.

Bayern stopper Yann Sommer then made a huge mistake but Matthijs de Ligt saved his blushes by clearing Vitinha's weak effort off the line.

PSG were without the injured Neymar while defenders Marquinhos and Nordi Mukiele both came off hurt, upsetting their rhythm slightly.

Choupo-Moting tried to profit but failed to shoot when in a good position after Jamal Musiala's mazy run early in the second half.

Soon after Choupo-Moting had the ball in the net but it was ruled out because an offside Müller reached for the ball before it went in.

Choupo-Moting did not have to wait long though, tapping home after Leon Goretzka and Müller robbed Verratti in the box as his old flaw of taking too many touches was exposed.

The Italian appealed to his compatriot referee Daniele Orsato that Goretzka fouled him, but the video assistant also said no.

Sergio Ramos later had two good headers but PSG did not do enough, substitute Gnabry scoring on the break on 89 minutes and Sadio Mané even having another effort chalked off for offside.

PSG defender Danilo told Canal+: "Unfortunately, Bayern were too strong. We had chances in the first half, we didn't take them, and in the Champions League, that makes things difficult. Bayern are a physical team, they win lots of duels. We lost too many tonight."

In London, kick-off was delayed by 10 minutes due to the teams arriving late amid heavy traffic, much like the Chelsea game a day earlier. Wing-back Emerson Royal was recalled by Tottenham while Milan's Olivier Giroud shrugged off 'flu to play.

Junior Messias went close early for the visitors, with Brahim Díaz and Giroud also having chances, as Harry Kane was Spurs' sole threat.

On Tuesday, Chelsea eliminated Borussia Dortmund and Benfica embarrassed Club Brugge to progress. The rest of the last-16 second legs, including holders Real Madrid against Liverpool, are next week.
