The 37-year-old former Dutch international Arjen Robben put an end to his career on Thursday, one year after his surprising comeback at FC Groningen, reported Xinhua.

"My football heart wanted to continue, especially with the ultimate goal of a full home stadium in prospect," Robben said on the website of FC Groningen. "But the decision to stop is fair and realistic. That is why I am no longer a player from today, but a supporter of our FC."

Robben returned to the football pitch after a year-long absence in the summer of 2020. Due to injuries, he has played only seven matches since his comeback, including four as substitute. "Looking back on last season, I have to come to the honest conclusion that the number of match minutes was disappointing," Robben said.

In 2000, Robben started his pro career at FC Groningen and continued at PSV, Chelsea, Real Madrid and since 2009 for Bayern Munich. He won eight German league titles with Bayern and led the German giants to the 2013 Champions League with the winning goal in the final against Borussia Dortmund. In 2019, he already put an end to his professional career for the first time.

Robben played 96 matches for the Dutch national team, in which he scored 37 goals. He made his national debut on April 30, 2003, against Portugal at the age of 19. He participated in three European Championships (2004, 2008, 2012) and three World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014). He finished second with the Dutch at the World Cup in 2010 and third in 2014.
