Sergio Gonzalez paid for the relegation of Valladolid from La Liga on Sunday as he was sacked by the club after three and a half seasons in charge, reported Xinhua.

Valladolid's 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid, which assured Atletico the title, saw them return to the second division after three years back in the elite since Gonzalez led them to promotion in 2018.

After looking well-placed to avoid relegation three months ago, Valladolid goes down relegated after a run of 12 matches without a win and just one win in their last 21 games.

In the statement confirming the dismissal, the club thanked Gonzalez for "his commitment and dedication during all of the time at the club" and wished him the "best personally and professionally for the future."

Sporting director Miguel Angel Gomez was also sacked ahead of what looks to be a major restructuring organized at the club which is now owned and presided over by former Brazil international striker Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima.

Huesca and Eibar are the other two sides who have been relegated from La Liga with Espanyol and Mallorca so far assuring their promotion back to the top-flight just a year after relegation.
