Real Madrid will be without captain Sergio Ramos for between six weeks and two months after he underwent an operation on his left knee on Saturday, the club has informed in a communique, reported Xinhua.

Ramos underwent the procedure to try to overcome an injury that has troubled him since the middle of January. His club informed that the operation had been a "success" and that he would now start his "recovery process," but even so it will need at least six weeks and probably around two months for him to recover.

That means he will miss Real Madrid's Champions League last 16 tie against Atalanta and at least seven La Liga games, including a visit to league leaders Atletico Madrid, and he could also miss the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals if Real Madrid qualify.

The operation comes at a time where Ramos' future at Real Madrid is still very much up in the air. The central defender is out of contract at the end of June and has yet to agree to new terms amid rumors of interest from Manchester United and Paris Saint Germain.
