Finland to open consulate in Munich

Finland will establish a consulate in Munich, Germany, said the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in a press release on Tuesday.

President Alexander Stubb confirmed an amendment to the Presidential Decree on Finland's Missions Abroad in this regard.

The consulate to be established in Munich will strengthen Finland's economic and trade relations not only with southern Germany but also with Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

The consulate will support businesses, organize political and commercial visits and promote Finland's country image in the region. In addition to business services, the consulate will also provide consular services.

From the moment it is established, the Munich consulate will provide services under the Consular Services Act to persons in distress.

Other consular services, such as passport services, will primarily continue to be handled by Finland's Embassy in Berlin until the consulate's own premises are ready.

Germany is one of Finland's most important foreign, security and trade policy partners in Europe, and regional presence in the country matters.

With a population of more than 13 million, Bavaria is the seventh-largest economy in the EU. Several Finnish companies operate in the state, and roughly a third of all German defense industry companies are located there. Bavaria also has a substantial automotive industry and a strong IT sector.

Meanwhile, at the presidential session on Tuesday the President appointed Roy Eriksson to serve as Head of Mission at Finland’s Consulate in Munich, said the ministry in another press release.

He will take up his duties on 1 October 2026.
