NBI probes into cable severing cases in Helsinki, Pirkanmaa

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is investigating two separate cases involving severed cables, one in Ylöjärvi, Pirkanmaa, and the other in Malmi, Helsinki, said NBI in a press release on Tuesday.

Police are investigating the severing of fibre-optic cables in Ylöjärvi, Pirkanmaa, on Midsummer Eve, 19 June 2026.

The damage disrupted train services between Tampere and Seinäjoki, with traffic suspended for several hours.

At this stage of the criminal investigation, the offence under investigation is aggravated criminal damage. Based on information obtained during the investigation, there are grounds to consider the act intentional.

The criminal investigation has been transferred from the Inner Finland Police Department to the NBI.

According to police information, people were seen moving by car, bicycle and on foot in the vicinity of the scene, on Terätie and at the Vaasantie end of Keijärventie, between 18:00 and 19:00 on Midsummer Eve.

Police asked these individuals to contact the police, as they may have information relevant to solving the offence. They are not suspected of any offence.

Meanwhile, the NBI has also launched a criminal investigation into the severing of telecommunications cables in Malmi, Helsinki, on 26 June 2026. The damage caused local disruption to telecommunications connections.

The police are investigating the incident as aggravated criminal damage and aggravated interference with telecommunications.

Based on the investigation, in this case too the cables were found to have been severed intentionally.

Anyone who was in the Takorautatie area of Malmi, Helsinki, at around 09:00 on 26 June is asked to report any observations relating to the incident to the police.
