An elderly woman was killed when a bus knocked down her at a pedestrian crossing in Helsinki city centre, police said on Sunday.

The accident took place on Saturday at about 12:50 p.m. on Unioninkatu road at the corner of Senate Square when the bus parked on the road slipped few meters and hit the woman while she was walking through the pedestrian crossing.

The woman sustained wounds critically and was taken to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.

Police, however, did not disclose the detail identity of the deceased.

Police suspected that the handbrake of the bus was not properly used when it was parked but the possibility of technical fault could not be ruled out.

The Accident Investigation Board and police are investigating into the incident to find out more information in this regard.

Police are investigating into the case as murder and endangering traffic safety.
