Suspect of attempted baby murder dies in prison in Oulu

A man, who was arrested on charge of assaulting his spouse and minor baby on Friday in Oulu, died in prison on Tuesday, police said in a press release.

Police said that man born in 1990s was found dead in the Oulu prison in the morning but did not divulge the reason behind the death and the detail identity of the deceased.

Police said that the man assaulted his spouse and two-week-old baby in their residence in the morning on February 20.

Responding to an alarm police rushed to the spot and found both the baby and the mother injured.

The baby was admitted to hospital in a critical condition, local media reported.

After the incident police arrested the father of the baby on Friday and produced him before Oulu District Court on Monday after interrogation.

The court sent him to prison where he was found dead on Tuesday morning.

Police are investigating in the incident to get more information about the death.

They, however, did not suspect any crime link to the death at the preliminary stage of the investigation.

Although police initially investigated the case as assault and aggravated assault, after preliminary investigation they changed the charge against the man as attempted murder.
