Man dies in police custody in Vantaa

A man died in the detention cell at Vantaa Police station on Thursday, police said in a press release.

Police, however, did not divulge the identity of the deceased but said that he was born in 1980s.

Police arrested the man from Tikkurila centre area early Thursday night as he was found severely intoxicated and took him to the prison cell of Vantaa police station.

The on-duty guard of the prison found him in unconscious condition during the inspection round after about one hour of his arrival.

Responding to an alarm, emergency service people and health professionals rushed to the prison cell and declared the man dead.

The Helsinki Police are investigating into the death to ensure transparency of the police role in this regard.

The prosecutor office will also probe into the involvement of police in connection with the incident.

A significant number of deaths in police custody were reported in Finland during the recent years.

Earlier on August 5, 2025, a young man died in the detention cell at Vantaa Police station.

On July 5, 2025 a man died in the detention cell at Kuopio main police station.

In February 28, 2025, another man died in the detention cell at Lahti main police station.

Several custodial deaths also took place in Finland in 2024.

A man died in the detention cell of police at Lahti main police station on October 1, 2024.

Another man died in the detention cell at Espoo main police station in October 2024.

In May 2024, two custodial deaths took place in the detention cell of police at Pasila in Helsinki.

On May 27, a man died in the detention cell of police at Pasila in Helsinki.

Another man died in the same detention cell on May 29.
