The North Karelia Border Guard on Monday held a foreign national for entering Finland after crossing Finland-Russia border illegally at Välivaara, said the Border Guard in a press release on Tuesday.

The person was arrested from Kitee municipality area near the border.

The Border Guard, however, did not divulge detail identity of the detainee but said that the person applied for asylum in Finland.

The Commander of the North Karelia Border Guard District communicated with Russian Border Guard’s Suojärvi Region in this regard.

The Border Guard is investigating into the incident as border crime.

Earlier in July this year, the Southeast Finland Border Guard held a man for entering Finland after crossing Finland-Russia border at Vaalimaa.

Finland continues to keep Russian border closed for sine die since December 2023 following Russian invasion of Ukraine.
