Man gunned down by police after wounding woman in Pirkanmaa

A man was shot dead by police during a gunfight when he was trying to escape arrest at Ruovedi, a municipality in Pirkanmaa region on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The incident took place at about 12:30 pm when the 47-year old man was trying to flee after wounding a woman in a residential building at the nearby Juupajoki area in the morning.

Police said that the man fired gunshot at them when they stopped his car on road number 66 using spiked mat, which prompted the law enforcers to use firearms.

The man sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot. None of the police was injured in the incident.

Earlier in the morning, the man attacked a woman inside an apartment building and wounded her critically at Juupajoki, a municipality in Pirkanmaa region and fled the scene by a car.

Police said that the injured 33-year old woman and the suspect were known to each other.

Responding to an alarm, police rushed to the spot at about 10:30 am conducted extensive search at the locality and adjacent areas to arrest the suspect.

Police spotted his location after about two hours on road number 66 at Ruovedi area and tried to arrest him resulting the gunfight between police and the suspect and death of the suspect.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is investigating into the incident to find out details about the attack on the woman and the death of the suspect.

At the preliminary stage, the police are investigating into the case as attempted murder, endangering traffic safety and firearms crimes.

“At this moment, the police have no information about the reasons behind the incidents. Although the suspect is dead, the police investigate the events, motives and backgrounds of the act as thoroughly as possible,” said Head investigator of NBI Jussi Luoto.

The office of the Prosecutor General is also investigating into the use of weapon by police in the incident and appointed special prosecutor Jonna Ryynänen to submit a report after conducting the investigation in this regard.
