Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto on Saturday condemned the attack on Author Salman Rushdie and the mass shooting in Montenegro on Friday, according to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
“Deeply shocked and saddened by the attack on author Salman Rushdie. Wishing him speedy recovery. Freedom of opinion and expression is a key part of fundamental and human rights,” Haavisto wrote in a twitter post of the ministry.
Rushdie was stabbed in rural New York on Friday while on stage at a literary event.
A man rushed the stage as Rushdie was about to deliver a lecture and attacked him.
The Foreign Minister in another twitter post of the ministry expressed profound shock at the mass shooting in Montenegro.
“Sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Montenegro after the tragedy in Cetinje yesterday (Friday),” Haavisto wrote in the twitter post.
At least 11 people were killed during the mass shooting in Montenegro's central city of Cetinje on Friday.
The violence started while the attacker was arguing with his family members. The man then started randomly shooting at people walking in the street, including children. He was eventually killed after firing at police officers.
