Dozens of people under the banner of Elokapina (Extinction Rebellion Finland) staged a demonstration at a Teboil refueling station in Helsinki on Saturday afternoon demanding cut off fossil fuels and stopping use of Russian fossil fuels immediately.

About 30 demonstrators gathered at the refueling station at Ruskeasuo, a neighbourhood of Helsinki about three kilometres away from the city centre at about 1:00 p.m. and prevented refueling operation at the Teboil, a subsidiary of Russian-owned oil company Lukoil to press home their demands, police said.

Access to the store, however, remained open throughout the demonstration, said police in a press release in the afternoon.

Police rushed to the spot and ordered the demonstrators to leave the station, but they did not pay heed to the order.

The police following discussions with the demonstrators and owner of the service station later allowed the demonstration until 4:00 pm.

Police will lodge a criminal complaint in connection with the demonestration.

Extinction Rebellion is a leaderless, decentralised, international and apolitical network using non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.

Earlier on August 1, Tampere based Finnish electricity company Tampereen sähkölaitos stopped purchasing petroleum product from Russian-owned petroleum company Teboil.
