Birth rate remains low, death rate high in H1

A total of 22,180 children were born in January-June period in the country and the number is 2,453 fewer than in the corresponding period 2021, according to Statistics Finland.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths was 30,854 in the first six months of this year, which is 3,166 higher than the stipulated period of the previous year.

The number of births was 8,674 lower than that of deaths.

Finland's population at the end of June was 5,552,550.

During January–June period the population, however, was increased by 4,309 persons.

The reason for the population increase was migration gain from abroad: the number of immigrants was 11,414 higher than that of emigrants.

Altogether 16,932 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 5,518 persons emigrated from Finland during January–June.

The number of immigrants was 694 higher and the number of emigrants 48 higher than in the previous year. In all, 3,321 of the immigrants and 3,475 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
