President Sauli Niinistö will make a working visit to the United States and meet with his United States counterpart Joseph R. Biden, together with Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson, in Washington D.C. on Thursday, said the President Office in a press release on Tuesday.

Niinistö is visiting Sweden from Tuesday and will leave Stockholm together with Andersson for USA on Wednesday.

At the meeting, the Presidents and Prime Minister Andersson will discuss, among other things, Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership, Russia’s warfare in Ukraine and the relationship of Europe and the United States in the changed security situation.

In addition to the discussions in the White House, Niinistö’s programme also includes other meetings with various political actors.

Due to Niinistö’s visit to the United States, the visit of President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen to Finland scheduled for 19–20 May has been postponed to another date.

Earlier on 13 May, President Sauli Niinistö held a trilateral discussion over phone with his US counterpart Joseph R. Biden and Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson and discussed various issues including the possible NATO membership application.

Niinistö and Biden last met on 4 March in Washington D.C.
