The Finnish Reserve Officers’ Federation (Suomen Reserviupseeriliitto-RUL) on Saturday expressed its support for Finland´ move to possible NATO joining application.
The federation at a meeting in Helsinki reviewed the situation and decided to take a formal position for joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), said the federation in a release.
“The majority of reserve officers have been in favour of NATO membership and we have been promoting the security policy debate on the matter for a long,” said Aaro Mäkelä, Chairman of the Finnish Reserve Officers’ Federation in a statement.
Mäkelä also said that through the official decision the federation clearly stated its views, which would support the decision-making process to lead Finland to NATO membership.
Earlier, the government on 13 April adopted a report on changes in the security environment and submitted it to the parliament with the view to assess the effects of the possible NATO membership application and making a decision in this regard.
The parliament started debate on the report on 20 April where several lawmakers stressed keeping the same pace with neighbouring Sweden on the issue of joining NATO.
