Snowmobile accident kills 1 in Rantasalmi

One person was killed in a snowmobile accident after the snowmobile went through the snow in a lake at Rantasalmi municipality in South Savo region early Sunday.

Police said that the accident took place after the midnight when three people were driving a snowmobile on the lake area from Porosalmi to Oravi.

At certain stage the snowmobile went under the ice at Peonselkä as the snow on the lake was melting at that time resulting the accident.

Two of the people managed to escape while the rest one went under the ice.

Responding to a call several units of Rescue Services and Police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the victim.

After the preliminary investigation police suspected link to drunk driving and intensive investigation is going on to find out the reasons behind the accident.

The Police, however, did not divulge detail about the deceased and the identities of the rest two, who were taken to hospital.
