January sees highest number deaths in Finland since 1945

A total of 5,540 people died in Finland in January, which is 482 higher than one year earlier, according to Statistics Finland.

The number of deaths rose by nearly 10 per cent from last year's January. The number of deaths in January 2022 is the highest since the start of the measuring history in 1945. The previous record for deaths in January was 5,492 in 2017.

During January, 3,976 children were born, which is 22 fewer than in the corresponding period in 2021.

The number of births was 1,564 lower than that of deaths.

According to Statistics Finland's preliminary data, Finland's population was 5,549,807 at the end of January.

Country's population increased by 208 persons during January. The reason for the increase was migration gain from abroad, since immigration exceeded emigration by 1,021.

In January, 2,029 persons immigrated to Finland from abroad and 1,008 persons emigrated from Finland. The number of immigrants was 634 lower and the number of emigrants 127 higher than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In all, 592 of the immigrants and 678 of the emigrants were Finnish citizens.
