Finland exercises full sovereignty over its security policy

President Sauli Niinistö on Friday held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and discussed various bilateral and international issues including the worrisome situation at the borders of Ukraine, said the President Office in a press release.

Niinistö pointed out in the discussion that Finland exercises full sovereignty over its security policy.

The Presidents spoke about geopolitics, including European security and the situation in Ukraine.

Niinistö expressed his serious concern over the current situation and emphasized that it is imperative to preserve peace in Europe.

In the discussion, the need to find solutions by means of the ongoing dialogue was emphasized.

The Presidents noted the 30th anniversary of the treaty on relations between Finland and Russia, 20 January 2022.

Earlier on December 14, 2021 Niinistö held a telephone conversation with Putin and discussed various issues, particularly the security situation at the borders of Ukraine.

On December 14, 2022, President Sauli Niinistö held a phone conversation with his counterpart of the United States Joseph R. Biden.

They discussed various bilateral and international issues including the situation at the borders of Ukraine.
