1 drowns in Polvijärvi

One person was drowned in the water near a house at Polvijärvi in the North Karelia region on Saturday morning.

Responding to an alarm at about 7:00 am, the rescue service people and police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the 57 years man hailed from Pyhtää, police said.

The police are investigating into the matter as a normal incident of drowning to find out detail about the incident.

At the initial stage, the police did not suspect any link to criminal act in connection with the incident.

The incidents of drowning increased significantly in the country during the recent period.

At least five people were drowned in separate incidents at different parts of the country during the last weekend (July 10 and 11),

According to the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation, 88 people were drowned in the country this year till last week.

The federation recorded 66 incidents of drowning in Finland in the first six months of 2021, which is 26 more cases than what it was in January-June, 2020.

With about 150 to 170 people drowning every year, the drowning rate in Finland is relatively high when measured in terms of inhabitants.
