1 gunned down in Lahti, suspect held

A person was shot dead in the city of Lahti, southern Finland on Sunday, reported news agency Xinhua quoting police.

A Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat later quoted police as saying that the incident took place out in the open, not inside a building.

Another Finnish language local paper Etela-Suomen Sanomat reported that the apartment building was cordoned off by the police.

The police said a suspect was apprehended, but did not give any information about the victim or the suspect.

The police said it would not provide further details until Monday.

It was the third incident of murder in the country with in a span of one week.

Earlier, a foreign female student was killed and 10 others were injured in a violent incident on October 1 at Savo vocational school in Kuopio, eastern Finland.

Another man was shot dead and a woman injured in Alavus, central western Finland on October 4 night, local media reported Saturday.
