Spending time regularly in nature can bring measurable health benefits, even though it is for a short time, said the Finnish National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) referring to studies.

The Health from Nature program, coordinated by the THL, recommends that everyone spend time in nature regularly, said an official press release on Tuesday.

Studies showed that even 15 minutes can bring measurable health benefits.

Nature time is an easy way to increase health and well-being in everyday life. Nature time refers to all the time we spend in nature – whether it's a local park, forest, beach, or other green or water environment.

Based on researches THL said that health benefits can be seen in just 10–15 minutes of nature visits and the effects are visible, for example, in the form of stress relief, improved mood and better recovery.

Benefits accrue from both short and longer visits, even just a few days a week.

"I would encourage everyone to consider how they spend their time in everyday life. Could it be that fifteen minutes in nature fits in? For many, for example, cutting back on screen time would free up a suitable moment to enjoy nature time. Nature is mostly nearby in Finland, and nature time can also be enjoyed in city parks and yards," said Jaana Halonen, a leading researcher of THL .

Studies have shown that spending time in nature and exercising supports mental health, relieves stress, helps prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes and strengthens the body's resistance.

Studies have found that nature time is positively linked to mental well-being, while screen time has been linked to the opposite effects.

"Everyone can find their own way to enjoy nature. The most important thing is to take time to be in nature – even a small moment at a time is enough," said Halonen.

The THL encouraged people to start spending time in nature on Finnish Nature Day, which is celebrated on Saturday, August 29th.
