11 more African swine flu cases detected in Finland

The Finnish Food Authority found 11 new cases of African swine fever (ASF) in wild pigs in the infected zone area in Southeastern Finland, said an official press release on Wednesday.

Five of the cases were detected inside the previously defined core risk area while the rest six were found outside of the core area but in the infected zone.

With this 11, a total of 14 infected wild boars were found so far.

The Finnish Food Authority will expand the core area this week following the discovery of the new cases.

Outside of the core area the new cases were detected in Miehikkälä and Virolahti municipalities, about one kilometre from the boundary of the area earmarked as risky area.

The authority asked the berry pickers, mushroom pickers and other outdoor enthusiasts to avoid the area.

Meanwhile, the authority continued search for the infected pigs in the area.

The Finnish Food Authority has trained a total of about 400 volunteer hunters for the searches.

The authority sent the samples of all the dead wild pigs to the Finnish Food Authority laboratory for examination.

Earlier in late July 2026, the first cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) has been detected in wild pigs at Vaalimaa in Virolahti, a municipality in Eastern Finland near Russian border.
