A total of 11,334 new coronavirus infections were diagnosed in the country in the last 24 hours, said the National institute for health and welfare (THL) in a press release on Friday.

About 1,800 of infections reported in Friday, however, stem from the Christmas period.

Out of the total infections, about 8000 were reported in the Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) hospital district.

The number of infections in Southeast Finland and Southern Ostrobothnia increased significantly during the recent days.

“The number of infections increased clearly. The rise of Omicron cases prompted the rapid spread of the virus. It is likely that the virus spread to family circles during Christmas,” said THL Director Mika Salminen, adding that such spread of Omicron was observed in Denmark and Norway recently.

A total of 375 coronavirus patients were undergoing treatment in the hospitals on Friday. Out of them 52 were in intensive care unit (ICU), said the THL, adding that the coronavirus death toll in the country raised to 1,564 till Friday.
