Many Filipino nurses recruited by private care companies are undervalued and lowly paid despite holding academic qualifications of high standard, reported national broadcaster Yle.

In most case the nurses end up working in elderly care.

Many of the nurses end up completing practical nursing degree in Finland despite holding more advanced qualifications from their country, said the report.

According to the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health-Valvira, it is unnecessary for Filipino nurses to study practical nursing in Finland.

However, care companies encourage the degree as many municipalities demand that private care home staff hold a diploma from a Finnish institution.

Care companies began recruiting Filipino around a decade ago, said the report.
