A police officer fatally shot a 44-year-old man who attacked officers with a knife in the northern Polish city of Bydgoszcz on Sunday evening, reported Xinhua, quoting the Polish Press Agency Monday.

Officers were called to a residential building in the city's Blonie neighborhood at around 9 p.m. local time (1900 GMT) after receiving reports that a man was harming himself, said Monika Chlebicz, a regional police spokesperson.

Reports said the man remained aggressive after additional patrols arrived. After the man advanced toward officers with a knife outside the building, a female officer shot him.

He received immediate medical aid and was taken to hospital, where his death was confirmed later, Chlebicz said.

Poland has seen several knife attacks in recent days. Nine people were injured in an attack at a school in Ostroleka on Wednesday. A day later, a 15-year-old former pupil killed a school employee and injured two others at a primary school in Leszczydol-Nowiny. On Saturday, three people were injured in another attack at an adult education school in Warsaw.
