Drought leading to significantly smaller harvest in Germany: Estimate

A prolonged drought across large parts of Germany has dealt a heavy blow to this summer's harvest, with around 3 million metric tons of grain and rapeseed lost since mid-June, according to an association representing farming companies, reported dpa.

The German Raiffeisen Association, which represents 1,600 cooperative companies in agricultural trade and processing, said on Thursday the losses amounted to revenue shortfalls of €600 million.

The association estimates this year's grain harvest at 40.6 million tons, down from 45 million tons in 2025.

"Only the favourable spring weather prevented greater damage," said expert Guido Seedler, adding that the harvest was still adequate overall but below average.

However, he said the late season losses were a "hard blow for an agricultural sector already suffering from sharp cost increases."

Low water levels impact transport

The association does not expect much impact on consumer bread prices, with Seedler explaining that these were driven by energy, labour and bureaucracy costs.

However, the sector is concerned by problems caused by low water levels in several rivers, since inland vessels also transport grain.

The Raiffeisen Association said reliable logistics were a crucial factor.

No acute problems are expected for grain intake, due to sufficient storage capacity. Onward distribution, animal feed supply and the transport of fertilizer could be an issue, however.
