Police in Leipzig have set up an additional post equipped with specialized radar at the eastern German city's airport following this week's incident involving an explosive-laden drone, reported dpa.

The equipment was installed on the visitors' platform of Leipzig/Halle Airport's old control tower, a dpa photographer at the location observed.

No further details would be disclosed for operational reasons, a spokesman for Federal Police said upon request.

According to the Tag24 news website, the addition is an EchoShield radar system capable of detecting approaching drones from greater distances and tracking their flight paths.

Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was discovered at the airport near a Ukrainian transport aircraft and was brought down by a member of staff.

In addition, an airborne DHL cargo aircraft collided with an unknown small flying object - possibly a second drone. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident on suspicion of attempted detonation of explosives and endangering air traffic.
