At least 11 people were killed and 53 others injured in a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight Monday, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, reported Xinhua.

Two Russian drones targeted central Kiev, capital of Ukraine, setting ablaze an 11th-century cathedral, Zelensky wrote on social media Telegram.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack killed five people and injured 34 others in the capital.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Kiev was the main target of Russia's assault involving 611 drones and 70 missiles, of which 582 drones and 50 missiles were intercepted.

In the eastern city of Kharkiv, five people were killed in the attack, according to regional Governor Oleh Synegubov.

Another person was killed in the northwestern Sumy region, the regional prosecutor's office reported.

The attack affected energy infrastructure, causing power outages in five regions in northern, eastern and southern Ukraine, said the state-run energy company Ukrenergo.

On the same day, Moscow said Russian forces conducted a massive strike on military-industrial facilities in Kiev, Kharkiv and Dnipro, in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks.
